Global Mapping of Seaport Operability Risk Indicators Using Open-Source Metocean Data

Seaport operability is key to the economic viability of ports. Metocean conditions (e.g., wind, short waves, and infragravity waves) affect this when certain thresholds are exceeded. This paper describes a method for global mapping seaport risk indicators using open-source metocean data. global-scale assessment provides geographic overview risks first-order insights into most relevant at each location. The results show that locations around equator inland seas have lower than farther away from equator. “Hotspots” mainly located along southern capes (Cape Good Hope, Leeuwin, Horn), ‘Roaring Forties’, exposed oceans. Of parameters considered, waves found be critical indicator port locations.
